When Industrial Grade Casters Are Needed

Casters come in many different shapes, materials, weights and sizes. Heavy wear items achieve the best function and performance when heavy duty casters are used. When selecting the industrial grade casters, there are a number of different considerations to make.

Industry

Different industries have unique caster requirements. For instance, spring loaded, shock absorbing casters are best suited for high capacity environments that call for an impact resistant product. High Temperature Environments

Casters that are engineered for high temperature environments are constructed from special materials that allow for autoclave, baking and other extreme temperature usage. Using casters that are not specially made for this purpose can sometimes result in melting and other related problems.

Flanged Track Wheels

Some manufacturing companies run tracks through their plants to carry carts and bins and for other purposes. These types of environments work best with flanged track wheel casters. They are manufactured with both single and double flanges.

Weight Considerations

When selecting casters, it is important to choose appropriate weight bearing strength. Attempting to use casters that are not made to withstand specific load weights can result in broken wheels and monetary loss. Industrial casters are manufactured to withstand as many as 5400 pound loads. The type that use forged steel construction are the strongest.

Swivel Wheeled Casters

When a heavily loaded vehicle requires 360? rotation, a swivel wheeled caster enables the wheel to move in any needed direction without changing the orientation of the vehicle. These casters are manufactured with a slight amount of offset distance between the center axis of the caster wheel and the center axis of the vertical shaft. This enables the wheel assembly to rotate around the caster’s axis when the wheel is not facing the correct direction upon movement of the wheel. Without the offset, rotation of the wheel will be impeded when the caster is not facing the correct direction.

Safety Concerns
Selecting the appropriate caster for a particular job is important. Using casters that are not made to withstand their weight loads or that are not made to perform their specific tasks can pose safety concerns for the employees that use them. Consulting a caster manufacturer prior to purchase is a good policy. The right casters can greatly improve productivity.
