Moving to a New Home

Whether you are moving across town or moving to another city, the process of packing up all of your possessions and relocating can be overwhelming. It is important to remember all of the things that must be done during a move. If you are struggling to keep track of tasks, here are some tips to help you stay in control.

Take Notes
Taking notes seems like a simple task, but many people forget to take notes when they should. If you meet with a real estate agent, contractor or other individual, then you should remember to take notes of any price quotes or other pertinent information. Be sure to ask for a copy of any papers that you sign during your meeting. You also need to make sure that you are aware of any responsibilities that you have during the moving process, such as making repairs to a home that you are selling. Try to have as many details in writing as you can.

Talk to Neighbors
When you are considering moving to a new area, you may want to talk to some neighbors in the area to learn more about the neighborhood. Drive around the area as much as you can to observe the area during different parts of the day. While your real estate agent can provide you with information, you will need to pick the home that makes you happy. If you drive around the neighborhood without your real estate agent, then you will have a chance to process your thoughts and make your own decision. You should also seek the advice of a trusted friend before you make a decision. It is easy to be persuaded by leasing agents and other professionals, but a friend will be able to provide a personal opinion.

Remember the Details
You will want to plan the logistics of your move beforehand as much as you can. Contact local utility companies to determine what you will need to do to cancel your current services and initiate service at your new address. If you have a mortgage, then inquire with your lender about an escrow account. You may also be able to find services, such as a furniture assembly service, that can help you during this busy time.

While moving can be stressful, being settled in your new home is a wonderful feeling. Once you have had a chance to unpack your boxes, be sure you take time to relax and enjoy your space.
